Vegas Trick, Tempting Scout Fastest in All American Derby and Oaks Trials at Downs of Albuquerque
(Albuquerque, NM) Vegas Trick and jockey Emilio Tapia pulled off a dramatic 9-1 upset win in the eighth trial race today to qualify for the Grade-1 $1 Million All American Futurity in the fastest time of the day, 20.996 seconds for 440-yards.
“He’s had some trouble coming out of the gate but today he really focused and got the job done,” Tapia said. “We’ve been working on the gate issues and everything worked out for us today.”
Vegas Trick is owned and trained by Marcelino and Jesus Cuanda. The gelding is sired by Jess Good Candy out of the mare Mavara Vegas by Fdd Dynasty, and won by only a neck over favored Visa and jockey Bryan Candanosa who also qualified for the September 2 nd final.
The gelding paid $20.40, $3.20 and $3.00 in winning for the third time. Vegas Trick was a finalist in the Grade-1 Ruidoso Derby on June 8 at Ruidoso Downs and finished fifth.
Trainer Toby Keeton and jockey Candanosa qualified four quarter horses for the All American Derby including Visa, Dashing Tres, Shoeless and Cuz Lightyear winning four of the eight trial races.
The 2023 All American Futurity Champion Cowboys Gun Z and jockey Agustin Silva also qualified for the All American Derby final by winning the sixth trial race for West Texas Racing and trainer Mike Joiner.
