Whistle Stop Café to Skip Ruidoso Derby. Eyes Mid-Summer Rainbow Derby.
Whistle Stop Café, undefeated winner of 2020 All American and Rainbow Futurities, will skip the trials for the $1 million (est.) Ruidoso Derby opening weekend and is expected to resume her racing career in the trials for the Rainbow Derby on July 11, 2021.
The three-year-old filly worked the morning of May 6 at Ruidoso Downs running 220-yards in 11.41 seconds, a bullet workout out of 33 other horses who trained at that distance that day.
“She’s one of a kind,” trainer Trey Wood said. “She’s grown a bunch over the winter—she’s become taller and longer—plus matured mentally and physically. She doesn’t have to run another step but she just loves it so much. That’s the reason why she’s back in training.”
Whistle Stop Café, owned by Whitmire Ranch, spent her winter on the Blane Wood Farm near Lubbock. She hasn’t raced since her victory Labor Day in the All American which was her sixth consecutive trip to the winner’s circle. She has earnings of $1.974 million.
