The Inside Track by Tim Keithley: Five Horses to Watch for Friday’s trials of the $1 million Rainbow Futurity
Here are some runners to pay attention to in Friday’s trials for the $1 million Rainbow Futurity:
Race 1: Flashing My PJ’s (#3) won her career debut at Remington in an unusual fashion. The filly barely broke and then came flying in time to pick up the victory. Her slow start kept her out of the Heritage Place finals but clearly the talent is there for trainer John Stinebaugh and Jockey Benito Baca. The same trial race features Ruidoso Futurity champ Cyber Monday so expect a nice price for this potential upset—morning line is 7/2.
Race 5: Jess Dividends (#1) is 8-1 on the morning line for trainer Clint Crawford and Jockey Francisco Calderon following two less-than-stellar career starts. “My rider said that when he leaves the gates he wants to look around,” Crawford said in the barn this week. “When we were working him over at Remington we were confident that he was a runner but hasn’t proven it to date. We still think the potential is there.”
Race 6: Remember Then (#4) is a top performer for the Blane Wood barn. The filly won her trial opening weekend without a fast-enough time but the potential is there. “She was one of our top horses when we were breaking horses back in Lubbock,” Jockey Ricky Ramirez said. She’s going to like 400-yards this weekend.
Race 13: Jesstiflying (#5) is a young colt out of the new sire Jess Good Candy who won the 2015 All American Futurity and was a $90,000 sale purchase at the Heritage Place sale in Oklahoma. The colt finished second in a maiden prep race June 6 but has shown talent in morning works for trainer Heath Taylor and Jockey Rodrigo Vallejo. Odds are 3-1.
Race 14: My Favorite Hocks (#3) was a strong winner opening weekend in his trial race for trainer Wes Giles and Jockey Adrian Ramos—just a little unlucky. Giles remains high on the gelding who is the son of Kiss My Hawks, a sire that was a former two-year-old World Champion that won the 2015 Rainbow Derby. The gelding has a strong physical appearance and appears to want more ground to cover—gets 440-yards on Friday to his benefit.
