Jess Savin Candy, “Rest, Eats” in Preparation for Triple Crown Attempt in the All American Futurity this Labor Day at Ruidoso Downs Race Track

Jess Savin Candy, quarter horse racing’s newest sensation, is getting plenty of rest and feed in the first few days following his victory and successful effort at qualifying for a triple crown attempt last Saturday in trials for the $3 million All American Futurity.

“He deserves a little downtime,” trainer John Stinebaugh said in the barn this week. “Right now we’re focusing on ‘what does he need’ both mentally and physically. He’s been out grazing in the mornings and doing his routine. He likes to eat and he’s doing plenty of that.”

Stinebaugh said the gelding is scheduled for a trip to the track to breeze and stand in the gate this weekend in preparation for the All American Futurity on Labor Day. The winner of the $1 million Ruidoso Futurity and $1 million Rainbow Futurity earlier this summer, a victory in the All American Futurity would make Jess Savin Candy the first triple crown winner since Special Effort accomplished that same feat in 1981—40 years ago.

Stinebaugh reflected on Saturday’s qualifying race, calling ‘Candy’s trip down the track, “a little goofy going out and swooping back to the inside. We’d like a little more straight down the track if possible next time,” John quipped.
