AA FUTURITY TRIALS: DAY 2

Ruidoso Downs, NM—Doing Something Good, a two-year-old New Mexico-bred gelding, broke sharply and held on to win the 1 st trial race Saturday and qualify with the fastest time of the day for the $3 million All American Futurity at Ruidoso Downs Race Track to be run on Labor Day, September 5.

With jockey Noe Garcia Jr. aboard, Doing Something Good ran the 440-yard course in 21.424 seconds for owner Sue May (J & SM Inc.) and trainer Fred Danley. “This horse keeps getting better,” Danley said. “We see improvement every time he runs. It’s a matter of maturity and his natural ability to run down the race track. I think he can still get better especially at 440-yards.”

Doing Something Good was disqualified for interference by stewards out of second-place and was placed third just two weeks ago in the finals of the Zia Futurity at Ruidoso Downs on August 7. It was a quick turn-around for the gelding to come back and start in Saturday’s trial races.

“I was a little concerned about the fact that the horse had just raced in the Zia, but I was confident that Fred would have the horse ready,” jockey Noe Garcia said. “You always know that about Fred.

Doing Something Good’s sire is Big Daddy Cartel out of the mare Start Somgthin Bad by Pappasito. The gelding paid $2.80, $2.20 and $2.10 to win. It was a third career win in five starts for the gelding who had previously raced in all state-bred events before today.

Other quarter horses that qualified on Saturday for the AllAmerican Futurity include: Chasing AJ in 21.640 seconds; Curls Joyful Wagon in 21.751 seconds; JP General in 21.801 seconds; and Orbyson in 21.813 seconds. Racing continues on Sunday at Ruidoso Downs with trials for the $460,824 All American Oaks and the $808,264 All American Derby to be run on Sunday, September 4.
